Cleaning healing stones – How to do it right

In short: Before cleaning, check the hardness and water tolerance of your stone. Quartzes such as clear quartz, amethyst and rose quartz (Mohs hardness 7) can tolerate a brief rinse under lukewarm water. Soft or water-sensitive minerals such as selenite, malachite, pyrite or celestine should be cleaned dry with a soft brush or cloth. Traditional energetic methods such as smudging, moonlight or singing bowls are gentle for all stones – their effect is not scientifically proven.

Cleansing Healing Stones – Why It Matters and How to Do It Right

Cleansing healing stones

Cleansing healing stones means, in the context of crystal lore: freeing a stone from accumulated energies and allowing its natural radiance – as traditionally attributed to it – to come through again. Whether you've brought a new crystal home or are regularly caring for an old companion – cleansing is the first and most important step in stone care. In this article you'll learn which methods really work, which stones you should never put in water, and how often you should cleanse your crystals.

We at Crystal Paradise have been guiding our customers through the world of minerals for many years – from our own experience we know: those who regularly care for their stones enjoy them more in the long run. Both on a material and on an energetic level.

Why You Should Cleanse Healing Stones

Crystals and healing stones consist of mineral structures that grew in the earth over millions of years. The Mohs hardness – a scale from 1 to 10, developed by Friedrich Mohs in 1812 – describes a mineral's scratch resistance. Among other things, it determines how sensitive a stone is to water, salt or heat. Selenite, for example, has a Mohs hardness of 2, amethyst 7, and diamond tops the scale at Mohs hardness 10.

In crystal healing lore, it is said that crystals absorb and store energies from their environment. An amethyst worn daily is said, according to traditional lore, to become "saturated" over time. Regular cleansing is said to release these accumulated impressions – similar to wringing out a sponge.

From a purely practical standpoint, cleansing also makes sense: skin oils, dust and residue can dull the surface of a polished stone. A freshly cleansed rose quartz or labradorite simply shines more beautifully.

The Most Important Methods for Cleansing Healing Stones at a Glance

1. Cleansing with Running Water

The best-known method is rinsing under running, lukewarm water. The water temperature should not exceed 30 °C – excessive temperature fluctuations can damage sensitive stones. Hold the stone under the water for 1 to 3 minutes. While doing so, visualize everything old flowing away with the water.

Important: This method is only suitable for water-resistant stones with a Mohs hardness of at least 6. Stones such as celestine, selenite, pyrite or malachite should never come into contact with water.

2. Cleansing with Earth

Burying a stone in earth is one of the oldest known cleansing methods. Place the stone in natural garden soil – not potting soil with artificial fertilizer – for 24 to 48 hours. According to traditional lore, the earth absorbs energetic residue while simultaneously giving the stone new earth energy. Afterward, rinse the stone carefully, provided it is water-resistant.

3. Cleansing with Smoke (Smudging)

Smudging with white sage, palo santo or frankincense is a gentle method suitable for all types of stones. Hold the stone in the smoke for 20 to 30 seconds. This method is particularly well suited for sensitive stones such as selenite (Mohs hardness: 2) or calcite.

4. Cleansing with Light – Moonlight or Diffuse Sunlight

Placing stones in moonlight – ideally during a full moon for 6 to 8 hours – is considered a particularly gentle method. Direct sunlight, on the other hand, should be used with caution: stones such as amethyst, rose quartz or fluorite can lose their color with prolonged direct sun exposure. Diffuse daylight for 2 to 4 hours is a safe alternative.

5. Cleansing with Sound (Singing Bowls)

Singing bowls made of metal or crystal produce vibrations that, according to traditional lore, are said to dissolve energetic blockages. This method is suitable for all stones – even fragile specimens. Simply place the stone in or next to the singing bowl and let it ring for 3 to 5 minutes.

6. Cleansing with Other Stones

Certain stones are considered self-cleansing and can energetically clear other crystals. According to tradition, these include: kyanite, selenite plates and clear quartz. Simply place the stone to be cleansed on a larger selenite plate or in a clear quartz geode for 12 to 24 hours.

Which Stones Should Not Be Cleaned with Water

This is one of the most common questions – and one of the most important. Some minerals react chemically with water or dissolve. You can find mineralogical background on individual stone types, for example, in the extensive database of Mindat.org Mineral Atlas, one of the world's largest mineralogical reference sources. Here is a clear list of stones you should never place in water:

  • Selenite (Mohs hardness: 2) – dissolves with prolonged water contact
  • Pyrite – oxidizes and can form sulfuric acid
  • Malachite – releases toxic copper compounds upon contact with water
  • Celestine – very soft and water-soluble
  • Calcite – sensitive to acids and water
  • Turquoise – porous surface, absorbs water
  • Angelite – can change upon contact with water
  • Azurite – contains copper compounds that are water-sensitive

Practical Tips for Cleansing Healing Stones – How to Do It Right

Healing stone cleansing guide with various crystals and cleansing methods

From our many years of experience working with hundreds of stone types, we recommend the following basic rules:

  1. Identify the stone before cleansing: Know your stone and its Mohs hardness. When in doubt, choose a water-free method.
  2. Regularity matters more than intensity: A quick weekly cleansing is better than an elaborate cleansing every 3 months.
  3. Do not use harsh cleaning agents: Neither dish soap nor alcohol nor chemical cleaners – they can permanently damage the surface.
  4. Charge after cleansing: Cleansing and charging go together. A cleansed stone can then unfold its energy anew.
  5. Always cleanse newly purchased stones first: Every stone passes through many hands before reaching you – transport, storage, display. An initial cleansing is a lovely ritual of taking ownership.

What comes after cleansing is just as important: charging. You can find everything about it in our collection Charging & Cleansing Healing Stones – Guide.

How Often Should You Cleanse Healing Stones?

There is no universal rule. The frequency depends on usage:

  • Stones worn daily (e.g., as a pendant or bracelet): cleanse at least once a week
  • Stones in living spaces (decoration, Feng Shui): every 2 to 4 weeks
  • Meditation stones: after every intense session
  • New stones: immediately upon receipt
  • Stones after stressful situations: immediately afterward

Special Cleansing Instructions for Popular Stones

Cleansing Amethyst

Amethyst has a Mohs hardness of 7 and is fairly water-resistant. A brief rinse under lukewarm water for 2 minutes is no problem. However, avoid direct sunlight for longer than 30 minutes – the violet iron-manganese pigment can fade. Moonlight or smudging are the gentlest alternatives. More on this in our article Cleansing & Charging Amethyst.

Cleansing Rose Quartz

Rose quartz (Mohs hardness: 7) is robust and tolerates a brief rinse without issue. Moonlight is also excellent – overnight for 6 to 8 hours. Direct sun exposure over several hours can cause the delicate pink color to fade.

Cleansing Labradorite

Labradorite has a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5. A brief rinse is possible, but salt water should be avoided. Particularly gentle: smudging or singing bowls. You'll find more in our article Cleansing, Charging & Caring for Labradorite.

How often do I need to cleanse healing stones?

This depends heavily on usage. Stones worn daily should be cleansed at least once a week. Decorative stones in living spaces are fine with cleansing every 2 to 4 weeks. After intense use or stressful situations, immediate cleansing is recommended.

Can I clean all healing stones with water?

No. Stones with a Mohs hardness below 6 or certain chemical properties – such as selenite, pyrite, malachite or celestine – should never come into contact with water. In these cases, choose a water-free method such as smudging, moonlight or singing bowls.

Do I also need to charge healing stones after cleansing?

Yes – cleansing and charging complement each other. Cleansing removes old energy patterns, while charging gives the stone new energy and direction. Full moon nights or placing the stone on a clear quartz geode for 12 to 24 hours are especially popular for this.

What is the gentlest method for cleansing healing stones?

Smudging with white sage, palo santo or frankincense, as well as cleansing with singing bowls, are considered the gentlest methods. Both are suitable for all types of stones – even sensitive minerals with low
