Buy Pietersite – the stone with the swirling chatoyancy
Pietersite is a quartz rock made of weathered crocidolite fibers – related to tiger's eye and falcon's eye, but tectonically fractured and re-cemented. This gives rise to its characteristic pattern: the chatoyancy doesn't run in one direction, but swirls. The trade name "storm stone" comes precisely from this.
The hardness comes from the quartz content, so 6.5 to 7. The classic deposits are Namibia and China.
