Turquoise is a hydrous copper aluminum phosphate with a Mohs hardness of 5 to 6. Its special characteristic is also its weakness: it is extremely porous. Water, soap, oils, and cosmetics penetrate the pores and permanently discolor it to a greenish tone – damage that cannot be undone.
