Cleansing Healing Stones – How to Properly Clear and Discharge Crystals

If you want to incorporate crystals and healing stones into your daily life, the topic of cleansing healing stones is unavoidable. This refers to the energetic clearing and discharging of stones: according to spiritual tradition, crystals absorb energies from their surroundings over time – regular cleansing is said to release these accumulated vibrations and return the stone to its original, clear state. Whether you've just received a new crystal from our shop or want to refresh a long-time companion – mindful cleansing is a valuable ritual that deepens the connection to your stone.
At Crystal Paradise in Feldkirchen bei München, we have been supporting our customers for years with well-founded knowledge from our showroom and our daily work with hundreds of handpicked minerals. We know: not every cleansing method is suitable for every stone – and this is exactly the knowledge we'd like to share with you.
What methods are there for cleansing healing stones?
There are several traditional methods for energetically clearing crystals. Which one is suitable for your stone depends on its hardness, structure, and mineral composition:
- Moonlight: In crystal lore, moonlight – especially during a full moon – is considered a gentle and universally compatible cleansing method for almost all crystals.
- Sunlight: According to spiritual tradition, a brief sun bath is suitable for robust stones such as clear quartz or amethyst – however, intense UV rays can cause color loss in some stones.
- Running water: Water-resistant minerals (Mohs hardness 6+) are traditionally cleansed under clear, running water. Caution: stones such as selenite, malachite, or pyrite are water-sensitive and should not be exposed to water.
- Smudging: The smoke of sage, palo santo, or frankincense is used in many spiritual traditions to clear and cleanse rooms and stones.
- Grounding (burying): According to traditional practice, crystals are placed in natural earth for a few hours or days to regenerate and realign themselves.
- Singing bowls and sound cleansing: In crystal lore, vibration is considered an effective method for releasing energies – suitable for all types of stones.
- Amethyst geode or clear quartz cluster: Other crystals such as amethyst geodes are traditionally used to cleanse and charge nearby stones.
Cleansing and charging healing stones – the difference and why it matters

Many people confuse cleansing with charging healing stones – however, these are two separate steps. Cleansing (also: discharging or clearing) refers to releasing accumulated foreign energy. Charging, on the other hand, realigns the stone's energy and, according to spiritual tradition, strengthens its individual qualities. The order matters: first cleanse, then charge. Learn more about correctly combining both steps in our detailed blog article: Cleansing and Charging Crystals the Right Way.
Which stones need special care when cleansing?
Not all healing stones tolerate the same cleansing methods. Water-sensitive minerals such as selenite, malachite, pyrite, azurite, or rhodochrosite should never be placed in water – their structure can dissolve or their surface can be damaged. Similarly, light-sensitive stones such as amethyst, rose quartz, or kunzite should not be exposed to strong sunlight for prolonged periods. If you're unsure which method is right for your stone, you'll find detailed recommendations in our comprehensive guide: Cleansing Healing Stones – How to Do It Right. Our article on cleaning and caring for celestite also offers a particularly practical insight into stone-specific care.
If you regularly work with crystals, you should also know the spiritual background: what crystal lore traditionally attributes to various minerals, and why care is an integral part of crystal work, is explained in depth in our article on Healing Stones and Spirituality.
By the way: our popular crystalpower® healing stones and energy stones should also be cleansed regularly – especially if they are worn daily as companions or used in water bottles. And if you're looking for your next crystal companion, browse our bestseller healing stones and get inspired.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I cleanse my healing stones?
There is no universal rule – however, according to spiritual tradition, it is recommended to clear stones that are worn daily or used mindfully once a week. Stones that are displayed decoratively or rarely come into contact with people can be cleansed monthly or on special occasions. A good indicator is also your own intuition: if a stone feels dull, heavy, or "flat," it's often time for a cleansing.
Can I cleanse all healing stones with water?
No – water is not suitable for all minerals. Stones with a Mohs hardness below 6, porous minerals, and those with metallic inclusions or carbonate structure can be damaged by water. Water-sensitive stones include selenite, malachite, pyrite, azurite, and rhodochrosite, among others. For these stones, sound, moonlight, or smudging are much more suitable. If in doubt, choose a gentler method – or take advantage of our consultation.
